Obtaining a requirements analysis

Obtaining a needs assessment from your local council is the first step if you believe that you or someone you know requires assistance to manage daily life.

This evaluation is required before the council can suggest a service like:

• devices such as a personal alarm or walking frame
• additions to your house, like a walk-in shower
• useful assistance from a paid caregiver
• daycare for your child if you or they have a disability.
• access to lunch clubs and day centers
• relocating to a care home

Anyone can request a needs evaluation, which is free of charge.

What takes place during the evaluation

You will be asked how you are handling daily responsibilities including cooking, cleaning, and dressing by a council representative, such as an occupational therapist or social worker.

They may ask you to explain how you perform specific tasks, such as getting out of a chair and brewing a cup of tea.

You may also be referred for a separate evaluation of your house if it appears that you might require certain adaptations in and around it, like grab rails in the toilet.

The needs analysis may take place:

• in-person
• on the phone

Typically, assessments take an hour or more.
